Deprovisioning has no equivalent forcing function — nothing breaks immediately when access that should have been removed simply isn’t, which means deprovisioning failures can persist entirely unnoticed for months or years until a security review, an audit, or worse, an actual incident specifically surfaces the orphaned access that should have been removed long ago.

The Role Change Blind Spot

Full offboarding — an employee leaving the organization entirely — is the scenario most IAM programs actually handle reasonably well, since it’s the most visible and process-triggering event. Internal role changes — a lateral move, a promotion, a temporary project assignment — are handled far less consistently, because they typically trigger new access provisioning for the new role but frequently don’t trigger a formal, mandatory review of whether access tied to the previous role should now be removed. Employees who’ve moved through several roles at an organization over time routinely accumulate a long, undocumented trail of access rights from every previous role, none of which were ever formally reviewed for removal after the person actually moved on.

Why Automated Deprovisioning Tied to HR Systems Is Necessary But Not Sufficient

Automating deprovisioning triggered directly by HR system events — termination, role change — closes a real and significant gap, but it only covers systems that are actually integrated with the automated identity provisioning pipeline. Shadow IT, direct vendor accounts provisioned outside the standard process, and locally-managed application accounts that were never properly integrated remain fully manual deprovisioning risks even in organizations with otherwise mature, well-automated core IAM tooling — which is exactly why periodic access reviews, covering systems the automated pipeline doesn’t reach, remain a necessary complement to automation rather than something automation fully replaces.

Why Periodic Access Certification Often Fails in Practice Despite Being Correct in Theory

Periodic access reviews — managers or system owners periodically certifying that each person’s access is still genuinely appropriate — are the standard, correct answer to catching what automation misses, and they’re also notoriously prone to rubber-stamping in practice: reviewers facing a long, unfamiliar list of technical access grants they don’t fully understand the implications of tend to approve everything wholesale rather than genuinely investigating each entry individually. Programs that get real, meaningful value from access certification invest specifically in making the review genuinely easy and contextual — plain-language descriptions of what each access grant actually allows, and highlighting unusual or long-unused access specifically — rather than presenting reviewers with raw technical permission names and expecting careful, individually-considered judgment on each one.

Identity and access management programs get evaluated heavily on how well provisioning works — how quickly and correctly a new employee gets access to what they need — while deprovisioning, the reverse process of removing access when it’s no longer needed, receives disproportionately less attention despite being where most real IAM program failures actually originate. … Read more

[5
16
post-430","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-application-security","tag-identity-access

 <!-- All in One SEO 5.0.2 -
